7 Things to Look for When Booking a Luxury Hotel

Beyond the star rating — the factors that actually determine whether a hotel stay is worth the money

A five-star rating tells you almost nothing useful about whether a hotel stay will be worth the money. The rating system measures inputs — room size, amenities, facilities — not outputs — the quality of service, the accuracy of photographs, or whether the "sea view" is actually a sea view or a partial glimpse of water between two buildings.

Here are seven things experienced travellers check before booking any luxury hotel.

1. The Gap Between Photos and Reality

Hotel photography is heavily styled. Wide-angle lenses make rooms look twice their actual size. Digital colour correction makes sunsets look permanent. The most reliable check is to look at guest-uploaded photos on review platforms — these are unstaged, unedited, and usually more honest.

UNO Hotels & Resorts requires partner-verified photo accuracy before listing any property. Our operations team confirms that the images match what guests will actually find on arrival.

2. Review Recency

A hotel with 200 five-star reviews averaging 2018–2020 tells you very little about 2025. Management changes, staff turnover, renovations gone wrong, and ownership disputes can transform a property within a year.

Filter reviews to the last 6 months. If a hotel that was consistently excellent has seen a cluster of complaints in recent months, something has changed.

3. The Service-to-Room Ratio

More than any other single factor, the ratio of staff to guests determines the quality of service. Large hotels with hundreds of rooms spread the same staff across too many guests. This is why intimate properties — 20–40 rooms — consistently outperform larger hotels on service metrics even when the physical facilities are less impressive.

4. What "Included" Actually Means

Breakfast included sounds simple. In practice: is it a la carte or buffet? Are beverages included? Is it available at all hours or only during a narrow window? Does "free WiFi" mean the entire property or just the lobby?

Before booking, read the fine print on inclusions. A luxury hotel that charges separately for every element of a stay is a fundamentally different product from one that is genuinely all-inclusive.

5. Cancellation Policy Clarity

Understand the cancellation policy before you confirm. At UNO Hotels & Resorts, our platform policy is transparent: - More than 15 days before check-in: 90% refund - 7–15 days before check-in: 50% refund - Less than 7 days before check-in: no refund

Some properties on other platforms have non-refundable rates buried in the booking flow. Always read the cancellation terms before paying.

6. Location vs Address

"5 minutes from the beach" can mean 5 minutes by car or 5 minutes on foot. These are very different things. Check Google Maps for the actual walking time between the hotel and the attractions that matter to you. A hotel that is technically in Udaipur but is 45 minutes from the lake is not, in any meaningful sense, an Udaipur lake hotel.

7. Ownership and Management

Owner-operated hotels almost always deliver a more personalised experience than managed-by-chain properties. When you email a family-run property with a specific request, you are often corresponding with the person who set the menus, chose the décor, and trained the staff. The response is usually faster and the fulfilment more personal.

UNO Hotels & Resorts specialises in listing independent and boutique properties where ownership is transparent and the personality of the people behind the hotel is part of what you are paying for.
